Welcome Friends!
Not gonna lie. Things have gotten quite tough at Tastebuds Cork! What got me through the brutal winter was the thought of how it was going to be in summer. I pictured it being so busy, that I’d have to set Ari up his own little lemonade stand on the patio to keep up with the demand for ice-cold drinks to cool everybody down!
The reality is that Midleton has become a ghost town and a cold one at that, and I am barely making enough to pay the rent at my great little spot. I’m sure I have mentioned in some of my newsletters how amazing it is that Ari and I now have friends from all over the world including the Czech Republic, Poland, India, Tunisia, Spain, Italy, Finland, Germany, Morocco, Cameroon, Slovakia, and Romania. Midleton is a melting pot with sixty percent of the population coming here from another country. The only problem is, when school finishes everyone goes home or on holiday!
I grapple each and every day with what to do, and as it usually does, the answer has come to me in a theater! Last night I took the train into Cork and saw a brilliant play called Vixen and I realized that there is only one solution; I’ve got to write my way out of this mess I’m in! So to everyone who has reached out to offer me a home, job, or even a restaurant if I were to move back to the States, I say thank you. You’ve listened to me complain about the weather, my money problems, and my loneliness. You’ve been my shoulder to cry on, and trust me it’s good to know I’ve got options. But, let me finish what I came here to do!
Four years ago, I moved to Ireland to become a writer. Since then I’ve been fumbling around in the dark, searching through the cobwebs in my mind, and combing through old journals, writing essays, and telling the stories that are near and dear to my heart. After seeing the play Vixen, I am almost blinded by the floodlights that are suddenly illuminating the next steps I’d like to take. While I am incredibly proud of the 36 newsletters I’ve written so far, it’s time to zero in on my screenplay, Screw Ruhlman.
Seeing is believing and when the writer of Vixen, Helen Casey joined actress, Rose Henderson on stage after the performance to take questions and have a lively chat, I thought to myself, ‘This is it! This is what I want to do with the rest of my life!’ I’ve been telling stories my whole life. When I moved to Ireland I began writing them and now, more than anything, I’d like to bring them to the stage.
I am so excited and I am delighted to have all of you with me along for this incredible exciting journey! I couldn’t have gotten this far without your support and encouragement!
Thank You For Being Here With Me My Friends!
Cheers!
Bridget
PS: PLEASE forgive me for mispronouncing Brushetta not once, but twice! I always panic before and after saying it because it’s one of those words like Porsche. If you pronounce it wrong nobody minds unless they are a douche, and if you pronounce it right, you sound like a douche!
It’s brew-SKET-tah by the way!
