Welcome Friends!
Well, the shite weather has returned to Ireland and I regret so much not taking a video the last few weeks when it was absolutely gorgeous. Seriously! We had six dry days in a row the last week of September, SIX! They were sunny and 70° with just the slightest cool breeze making its way from the Celtic sea to my home of Midleton.
With the great weather came new customers and quite a few tourists, so I extended my hours and opened six and seven days a week. “Make hay when the sun shines,” as the saying goes! So, now that I have no business, I am sitting behind my laptop at Tastebuds, staring out at the rain and connecting with you, my dear readers and that makes me very happy!
So let me catch you up on what’s going on. On second thought, let’s have my journal do that!
Journal Entry
September 22, 2024
Living an artist’s life today and loving it thanks to some fresh new inspiration! It feels like it’s been so long since I’ve been creative. With only one day off a week, it’s been incredibly difficult to devote any time to my writing. Today, between the cleaning, cooking, hoovering, and laundry, I wrote down some ideas for a one-woman show that I could do in Cleveland when I am there at Christmas. Might be nice to do my first show in front of some familiar faces, people who already love me and my food before putting it on in Cork.
Friday night was Culture Night in Cork and I volunteered to work the door at Alice Barry’s Cabaret show which was just down the street, partly because I wasn’t able to get a ticket before they all sold out and partly because I am trying to immerse myself into Midleton’s theatrical crowd and learn whatever I can from the performers.
Ari decided he’d better walk me down to the performance after several men in our estate commented on how great I looked in my feather headband and flapper’s shawl and gloves! As we walked into My Place he stared down any man who looked at me affectionately. It’s a side of Ari I’ve never seen before and I loved how protective he was of me. Is this why everyone warned me to start dating before he turns nine? Oh well, there is no time for any of that now anyway!
Ari stayed with me as I greeted guests and checked their tickets. Without me asking he began holding the door for everyone and I was so delighted to see that warm hospitality just comes naturally to him, like so much of our family! When the show was about to begin I told him to go home but he wanted to stay. “This is a Cabaret Ari. There may be adult content not suitable for kids, like half-naked women.”
“Mom, you took me to the Moulin Rouge in Paris when I was nine! Did you forget?”
I gushed with pride! Needless to say, he stayed! The show was tame compared to the Moulin Rouge but we enjoyed it thoroughly. As we watched all of the performances, I just kept thinking that there was a first time for all of them; the actress, the magician, the singer/songwriter with the accordion, the spoken word rapper/poet. They all conquered their fears and took to the stage and grabbed that microphone that they seemed so comfortable holding now. I swear, the lights, the microphone, the stage, they are practically shouting for me to come up and get that terrifying first performance over with!
